40Gb Hard Drive Only Showing 6.9Gb !.

I have a 40Gb hard drive but it only recognising 6.9Gb and I'm dammed if I can think of how to get it to recognise the full 40 ish Gb.

When you say the 40GB isn't recognised do you mean the BIOS or just in Windows Explorer? If the latter then it might be just a case f partitioning?Open up the Local Desk Managemenr section of the Computer Management console and see how much of the disk is used.

I suspect you will see a blue section saying "6.9G healthy C:" and a grey section with "33GB Unused"

I think I was over tied last night, Its a spare machine I'm testing out VMware Server.

I got it to recognise it, But its only now showing 33.82Gb in Bios and 31.49Gb in Disk Manager.

What has happened to the other missing Gb's. ?.

Do you normally use Master / Slave or Cable select ?. with one or more drives.

How old is the machine? Some BIOSs have a 32GB limit, update the BIOS would be a good place to start.

Hi Peter.

It's a Asrock MoBo with a bios date of 28/10/2004.

Hard drive 1 is also a 40Gb Maxtor (the other one is a Samsung) that's showing 41.11Gb in Bios and 38.2 in Disk Manager.

Re check your jumper settings on the sammy and specifically look for something called clip, you dont want clip enabled.

 

The clip function is used to limit the hdd to 32GB so it would be compatible with boards that have a 32Gb limit as already mentioned.

 

If clip is set on your drive it will only appear as 32GB.

I do not think I have that enabled but I will have a look tomorrow.

Cool if you could post the model number of the drive I could double check if it has the feature.
