Hello, I recently got a Thecus N5500 NAS (5x 2TB) and I have configures all 5 drives in a RAID 5 array and I would like to have two partitions. One partition for media and such around 5TB and a second partition around 2.5TB for clients backups while we work on their computer.

 

I can not seem to figure out how to partition my RAID array, can anyone help me out here?

 

I can not seem to find any instructions on the Thecus website/Manual/YouTube... Is this maybe not possible to do?

If it's the N5500 dishing out the storage as shares, then you will need to divvy up the discs into 'partitions' at the point when you are creating the RAID, i.e create one RAID array at 5TB and another at 2.5TB.

 

Once you have created the RAID you could only partition it if it is severed up as an iSCSI LUN to a server which could then chop up that as a lump of storage.

So basically, The only way to do it is to create two RAID arrays?

It rather depends what you are trying to do. If the N5500 is acting as a file server, I'd configure the RAID as a large lump and then use the "share folder" to divvy up the space (i.e. set the share folder limit). If I was using iSCSI then presumably the system which is using the disc can 'partition' and handle the blocks as it sees fit (although the N units aren't quite as flexible with iSCSI as (say) the i4500).
