cotomp Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 so i got the first portal to help decide if i want the new one and before i even think about playing it it crashes. I downloaded this through steam and every time it crashes it says hl2.exe has stopped working. Ive tried reinstalling, updating drivers, and loads of other things to no avail. Any help would really just make my day thanks
Dos_Box Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 What OS are you using? Portal one was released in 2007, before windows 7 was released, so perhaps you should try compatability mode to start with perhaps?
cotomp Posted April 30, 2011 Author Posted April 30, 2011 im not too fluent in computer language but i did try it in comparability mode and it continued to crash
Steve21 Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 Is it just crashing when you wait? I know a lot of my steam HL games crash if I try to "alt-tab" during boot. But if you let it finish booting they'll run (Might just be me though) Steve
cotomp Posted April 30, 2011 Author Posted April 30, 2011 its crashing in gameplay. usually in one specific spot
griffin Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 Have you got the latest version of your graphics cards drivers? They may help and I mean the latest from the manufacturer not from windows update.
cotomp Posted May 1, 2011 Author Posted May 1, 2011 yeah i got the driver update from the nvidia website and it didnt do anything. also this has started occurring in other steam games such as CSS
apoth0r Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 roll back your driver to an earlier date, if not - download a known legacy version of the driver that people have said 'works' (usually forums around) You may also need any updates the game has - check this also.
ZeroHour Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Can you give us your spec roughly? What sound card etc? Older games can have sound issues due to pre-vista era having post processing effects on the hardware so sound is a classic cause of crashes. DO NOT RUN IN COMPATIBILITY MODE, STEAM DOES NOT LIKE IT
cotomp Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 HP EliteBook 8540p Notebook PC specifications - HP Small & Medium Business products thats what im working with
ZeroHour Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Thanks for the spec Does it seem to crash after a similar time or specifically one spot in the game regardless of how long you have been playing it for?
cotomp Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 at first, i got decently far into the game without it crashing, then all of a sudden i would get to one spot where i would look into a door and it would crash. now it doesnt matter where i am, usually at the beginning of a level it crashes. And CSS also does this now.
CAM Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Right click the game in your library and do Verify Files on CSS, Portal and HL2. I run Windows 7 64-bit on an nVidia card and the Source Engine games are running properly.
Chris-W- Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 I have had random in-game crashes before caused by the Steam in-game community being activated. (I had problems in both HL2 EP1 and EP2) You could try disabling it see if has any effect. Chris
cotomp Posted May 3, 2011 Author Posted May 3, 2011 i verified the files already and it didnt do anything
