Which instructs to have the pairs matched between boards so if I followed the instructions from this video using four 4gb memory modules and the standard RAM ( two 1gb memory modules I would install as follows :

 

Riser Card A :

 

Slot one - 4gb

slot two - 4gb

slot three - 1gb

slot four - empty

 

Riser Card B

 

Slot one - 4gb

slot two - 4gb

slot three - 1gb

slot four empty

 

Where as per the OWC instructions it is advising to match them in pairs on each board as per below

Which would be better ?

 

I Presume the OWC Method ?

Option B as it looks to group into pairs before grouping accross risers:

It will be faster with all 8 slots populated though.

So far I have ordered the following but will only have 6 sticks of RAM for now as can not afford anything else :

 

Icy Dock MB9821ip-1s

 

OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 240 Gb 6G SSD

 

Still have to order the 16Gb of RAM and also ordered an anti static wrist strap off of flea bay for £3

 

All in all can't wait for it to get here, might be an older 2008 Mac Pro but will scream speed once its all in there

 

ok so my RAM and CPU are slower but not much else me thinks aside from obviously the GFX card lol

Personally I would not bother with an antistatic strap as it is actually more dangerous using one. You are trusting a your three pound bit of wire and velcro to keep your equipment safe. For it to work it must have good conductive contact with both you and your computer chassie at all times. The wires can get frayed and those little dome buckles are hardly reliable. The little clip can also slip off easily without you noticing.

 

I generally just leave the PC plugged in but switched off at the wall switch so there is no power running through it but it remains fully grounded. Then when you open it keep your bare hand/arm in contact with the metal bit of the case while you are working. This keeps you grounded and you can litterally feel that you are still in contact and grounded.

 

You are tecnhically still missing out on faster motherboard bus speeds, lower power consumption and the newer instruction sets of later CPUs but you are correct that it will still be a very fast PC. Also six sticks of RAM will be much faster than two so its still a good upgrade.

 

 

It does make me wonder though what do you use it for? I have a couple of laptops and an Atom based media server which serve me quite well, are you cracking nuclear codes in your spare time?

Hahahahaha - nah, want to setup a mini network ( server OS, some clients etc ) muck around with that, video encoding / multi media centre as have a DVI-D to HDMI cable to my HD TV, iTunes for music , pod casts etc

 

If it will make me lots of money and it being legitimate then I would do the cracking of nuclear codes etc but I very much doubt it being legit, I could do without a prison sentence lol
