Budget Survey

I will be closing the budget survey at the end of next week, so if you have no completed it (it is to your right in the survey section) then please do so.

 

Thank you to all those who have indicated what their budget levels are likely to be.

A lot of people in industry have been playing close attention to that survey y'know. We shall have to do it next year I think.

Anyway, the next survey, 'Do you use your fingernails to de-fluff mice rollers' will be up on Saturday.

Haha, if I knew what it was, i'd vote. I have never been in charge of the budget. Generally this is how it works for me:

 

- Either the ICT co-ordinator or myself think of or see something which we think the school could benefit from

 

- We ask head teacher if we can have said well thought out product

 

- If the head says no, I would probably appeal in the form of whinging and whining, but usually the head thinks our ideas are very good

 

- If the head says yes (either immediately or eventually), we ask the secretary if we can afford said product and she usually gets back to us within a day or two

 

I personally have no idea how much of our budget is set aside for ICT, I would say if anyone was in charge of it, it is the secretary.

Same here! No idea what it is in most of my schools.

Nope, I use a nice cotton bud soaked in tape head cleaning fluid (Isopropyl Alcohol) and give it a good rub. Any stubborn deposits get the electrician's screwdriver treatment

@Grumbledook: I think it is a joke how late it is left before we receive this information and no planning has ever been done in the past.... I am the first person in the history of the school to have produced a budget proposal!!!!!!!!!!!

 

How was I thanked for said proposal? I was told that there was no chance that much money could be commited to cross-curricular ICT! Hence my document showing how much a computer costs the school over a 5 year period!

 

The whole subject annoys me somewhat... I don't feel that I'm taken seriously sometimes.

I budget on a 3-year replacement plan for my fat clients, so over 5 years that's the cost of 2 PCs, 2x (cost of one hour labour performing the initial install), cost of software licenses (plus cost of upgrading Office which will innevitably need to be done once in a 5 year period).

 

My point was that adding computers to the network isn't a one off cost of a couple of hundred pounds (which has historically been the view of SLT and govenors). As a result the budget has not been an increased budget reflecting the growth of the network... possibly in part due to the working of miracles on my part.

Reimaging every two years?

 

You are kidding ... you should be preparing fresh images on a regular basis even if you don't roll them out to take into consideration patch management ... otherwise when you redploy and image you then have to patch it, either via WSUS or manually ... Then there are some applications that we put directly on to the machines to deal with interesting isses that arise due to deploying MSIs ... these get updated directly on the image and pushed out as needed.

 

We also have 400+ desktops ... and the time adds up, not including student / staff / classroom laptops.

MSIs for software that was decided to be put on between image cycles, WSUS for win/office updates between image cycles. Create a new image for roll out every 2 years with full updates and all software required.

You should be looking to reimage machines at least once a term to take into account software updates. Otherwise when you come to reimage individual machines they are vulnerable. This is the main reason for standardisation on hardware. The more standard your site - the more up to date your software images can be and the more stable the site.
