[sims] FMS over VPN error Exception in module Finance.exe at 0016BF69

FMS on Win7 laptop works fine in school but gives error below over VPN. Everything else including Sims is fine over VPN. Any ideas?

1. Never, never run FMS over a VPN connection. It's silly.

 

2. Check the fmsconnect.ini, make sure no redirect, and the servername can be resolved (minus the SQL instance).

Not something I would normally do but is required for a one off.

Think fmsconnext.ini is ok but will check next week. Server name can defiantly be resolved and DNS all works over vpn.

 

All curric software, Sims and office software work 100% its just FMS causing problems.

Why is it silly? A VPN is connecting to your network as if you're on it locally, so why shouldn't you do that?

Just a few of things to think about:

 

• FMS is very sensitive to default printers (regardless if you're printing or not)
  
• Use IP addresses instead in all SIMS related .INI files
  
• Try not using FDS (create shortcuts)
  
• Re-install FMS whilst on the VPN
  
• RDP to a workstation / server in school instead

Why is it silly? A VPN is connecting to your network as if you're on it locally, so why shouldn't you do that?

 

The fact is it doesn't work well over a low bandwidth\high latency connection.
