How and where internet useage is logged / monitored ?

I work with Paul ( screen name is kingswood on this site ) and there is a proxy server ( I hope thats what it is called lol ) at our school and I want to know where and how and in what format ie file type the data with regards to internet useage is stored in or how it is done.

 

Basically the cse web tracker is a pain in the ass and squid is probably hard to use or learn and I am pretty good ( Not an expert as of yet ) in programming and if I know how this data is stored and basically how to access it then I can go from there and use ARP on the machines to convert an ip address to machine name and from there use the machine name and access the computer remotely to return a logon id.

 

Anyway enough babbling , Just need the info , unless anyone knows any open source or freeware or even just easy to use apps that will do this in the first place that would save a lot of time.

We use Squid on Linux at Carr Hill. It pulls the login information from the client machines so we get user info in the log files. I have various PHP based tools to extract the relevant information from the logs and make it teacher friendly and searchable.

no there's loads you can configure in squid - filtering, authentification - just delve into the config file.

It all depends on what the proxy server is running. If it is ISA then there are tools as part of the scriptomatic that you can use.

 

Failing that crystal reports is a good bet.
