I'm looking at either an HP E4800G Stack (3 of) using the 24 port SFP option or either the HP 5400zl chassis what would people recommend?

We use a stack of 4x 3Com 5500G's which are in the same (ish) market as the E4800's - the 5500's look slightly higher spec.

Having said that, we will probably upgrade from these in a year or two and move them out to the edge.

I'd be wary about buying either HP or 3com. HP bought 3com last year, and it isn't guaranteed that they will ultimately keep both ranges on, whether they will move the patented 3com tech such as XRN into the HP or continue the 3com range.

The E4800G image on there website is currently a 3com switch - so is the E5500G which i think is a direct comparison to 3com one you mention.

It seems likely. Speak to an HP/3Com reseller (such as switchshop, they really know what they are talking about).

 

There is a 3com 4800 series as well - we currently use these as near-edge switches. They are probably the direct equivalent or same as the HP E4800??

yeah the 24 sfp version is the image on the hp site!

I dunno if you are running win2k3 or win28(r2) but you could try to disable RSS,TCP chnimney and autotuning.

 

for w2k8®:

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

netsh interface tcp set global chimney=disabled

netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled

 

(REBOOT NEEDED)

 

In my experience it could solve some weird slowness in m$ networks
