adamf Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 A large number of our staff have been experiencing the error below (see screenshot) http://i52.tinypic.com/2mc8saa.jpg and http://i55.tinypic.com/28hopl4.jpg for over a week now and I seem to be getting no where in terms of fixing it. Things i've tried: Resetting the OWA VD Ensuring clients are up to date with Windows Updates Uninstalled Sophos (as a temp measure to see if that is contributing to it) I've spotted this error in eventvwr on the CAS server, but not really sure if it's related or not as there are not too many of them. Watson report about to be sent for process id: 8716, with parameters: E12, c-RTL-AMD64, 14.01.0218.015, OWA, unknown, unknown, System.InvalidOperationException, 0, unknown. ErrorReportingEnabled: True Does anybody have any ideas about what might be causing this or any suggestions for troubleshooting? We are using Exchange 2010 SP1 RU3.
tarquel Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 does the ExBPA tool health check diag give u any clues?
adamf Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 No... ExBPA doesn't show anything ovbious...
sukh Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Hi Adam Looking at the errors, I firstly just want to confirm, are you having issues with accessing OWA? If yes, is OWA published externally? Or only internal? Thanks Sukh
adamf Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 No... I don't have any issues accessing OWA, they only occur when logged in.
sukh Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Once the user is logged in, what actions do they take to pass the errors? After the actions taken, do they have access to their mailbox via OWA? Do you see any errors on your CAS Server under the Event Logs? Are there any errors on the PC where you launch OWA from under the Event Logs? If you pick a problematic user, does the issue follow them on every PC they use? Does the issue occur only on certain PC's? Thanks Sukh

Does the issue occur only on certain PC's? Thanks Sukh The actions the users take tend to be opening an e-mail in a new windows, running a spell check against an e-mail. Once this happens they generally do still have access to their mailbox. There is no ovbious errors on the CAS server and I haven't seen an errors on the client that OWA is being accessed from. The problem does seem to follow users and isn't occuring on particular PCs as far as I can tell.
sukh Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 If you create a new user with out any windows profile and test OWA on a PC, do you still get the issue?
adamf Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 Don't know, not tried that. Do you think it could be profile related?
sukh Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Have you performed an IISrest /noforce on the CAS? How many CAS servers do you have?
adamf Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 Yes i've done a iisreset /noforce becuase its the final step when resetting the OWA virtual directory. We have 2 CAS servers although at the moment only 1 is used to publish OWA. The intention is to load balance at a later stage.
sukh Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 If your second CAS server isn't being used yet, (I dont know the specifics of your deployment), can you point to the 2nd CAS and try that. Not sure if you have a DNS Alias for your CAS server OWA URL or not? If you have change this. If not, the use set-casmailbox for a specifc user to the 2nd CAS and test. Let me know. Thanks Sukh
ful56_uk Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 is this only internal when you see the errors? I had this but later found out it was impero causing it
adamf Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 Yep, only internal we are seeing the errors. We use Policy Central Enterprise which would be installed on all the clients having this problem....
ful56_uk Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Have you tried adding the site into the proxy exceptions list in ie and adding it as a trusted site
adamf Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 It was a trusted site but I've now set that in Group Policy so it will be applied. I can't add it as a proxy exception becuase we use the external URL to access OWA. Staff have reported freezing (but no errors) when using the Internal URL.
sukh Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 so has adding it trusted site fixed the issue or was it already in there? accessing OWA internally, is that a seperate issue from your original post?
adamf Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 I don't know if adding it as a trusted site fixed it. I will found out today.
ful56_uk Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 if staff are using the external address, cant you try adding a new local dns record and point that to the owa site so staff are still using the external link but traffic is only staying on the internal network because it sounds like there are going out externally to access the site which is internally hosted
adamf Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 if staff are using the external address, cant you try adding a new local dns record and point that to the owa site so staff are still using the external link but traffic is only staying on the internal network because it sounds like there are going out externally to access the site which is internally hosted I could do, but how?
sukh Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Create a record in your internal dns for, cname pointing to your external url. You're still hitting the same CAS, that's why you have two URL's. As a test can you point the clients to the 2nd CAS?
SYNACK Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I could do, but how? Add a new authoritive zone in your local DNS server for mail.yourschool.external then add an A record into it with no name (making it the default responce) pointing to the internal IP of your Exchange server. 1
adamf Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 It appears adding a new authoritive zone has not fixed the problem... Any other suggestions?
adamf Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 I could change the dns zone I setup yesterday to point to the other CAS server - this would only work internally as to make the change work externally would mean submitting a change request to our ISP.
