MCITP vs MCSA/MCSE training material

I know there are loads of threads about MCSA/MCSE/MCITP. I *think* that what I want to know hasn't been answered already but, if it has, apologies!

 

I was all set to go along the MCSA/MCSE route and it was straightforward ... 70-270, 70-290, 70-291 etc. I got the MS books for the latter two exams and have found them useful and interesting.

 

I've looked into the many, somewhat confusing, exams that aim towards the variations of MCITP and it doesn't appear that any cover material similar to what's in the 70-290 and 70-291. I realise that the MCITP is aimed really at Windows 2008 and Windows 7 rather than Windows 2003 and XP.

 

Can anyone tell me which of the new exams/books are closest to covering the material in 70-290 and 70-291? I guess that much of the material is similar but I suspect that some of the dialogue boxes etc. may have been updated. I'm somewhat old fashioned and like to go to a large book store to actually look through the books but those that I've seen have small IT sections and very few have specialist IT material (as opposed to "Windows 7 for the elderly" or "How to buy or sell successfully on eBay" etc.)

MCITP - Server Administrator is probably the nearest equivalent to the MCSA, but without the client OS requirement that the MCSA had.

 

The three courses that make it up all overlap the server portion of the 2003 MCSA so you'd want all three. The 70-646 goes over a lot of what's done in 70-640 and 70-642 as well as expanding on it.

 

70-640 - MCTS Server 2008 Active Directory

70-642 - MCTS Server 2008 Network Infrastructure

70-646 - MCITP Server Administrator

Microsoft have phased out the msca and mcse and have changed the names.

I'm grateful for the comments. I'll look into getting the updated material and head for MCITP.

depending how far you are it may not pay to do so. The mcsa and mcse have upgrade exams to achieve mcitp status. Dont be fooled into thinking one supercedes the other, they are very different quals with different topics covered. If you can have both them its much better than just having one.

 

Also... MCSA's wont expire, mcitp's will. and mcsa, mcitp is better looking on a cv than 2x mcitp and the mcsa is frankly a better subject range then the mcitp:sa.

They are not completely phased out though yet as you can still sit the exams and certify as MCSA and MCSE aswell as the MCDST if you want it. The MCDST exam sets expire June 2011, the MCSA and MCSE exams are not currently due to expire.

Hmm, I'd heard about the difference in whether they expire or not. Maybe I *will* go for MCSA after all! I have A+ and Network+ so they exemt me from the fourth exma for MCSA.
