[WSUS] - Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Available

Posted this in the Win7 forum but I guess its more applicable in here.

SP1 is available via WSUS now.

Got it in ConfigMgr now - time for some test deployment's tomorrow....

Test very carefully - especially software deployments after it's installed. I have an ongoing issue with large packages (such as Office) not installing on any SP1 machines when published via System Center Essentials. I believe SCCM uses a different deployment model but be sure to test it thoroughly.

In our main suites I've just deployed this by hand, lanschool makes it easy to logon to all computers at once and run a command. I'm going to test how this works over WSUS to death tho, as I can't be bothered to install it by hand on our various teaching consoles!

90% of our machines are laptops, so I think Ill just wait till we reimage the lot before going to SP1.

so far so good - no deployment issues via wsus.

as far as sp1 goes we've not had any issues on our manually installed PCs (touch wood)

Made up a Win7 SP1 SCCM OS deployment with no issues a week or two ago. Works a treat. Havent found anything wrong with it. Everything seems to deploy as it should.

 

For reference, using SCCM 2007 SP2 with R3, PXE booted TS advertised creation of a reference build image, and deployed via PXE TS advertisement.

 

EDIT: I'm yet to update existing RTM machines with SP1 for the moment (still need to engage brain with how to really get the updates working correctly/maintainance windows/etc).

That's the stage I'm at - though got Software updates working so really just need to create a test deployment before letting it go wild...

hehe SCCM's management of WSUS/MU seems so complex compared to just running WSUS, although the SCCM Maintainance Window(s) thingy seems good idea - just not had chance to put it into practice.

 

As Win7 SP1 deploys out like a dream, i'm currently working on getting a custom boot wizard set up, and hitting a few (many) road blocks. Suppose it doesnt help that i never bothered to learn VB scripting.... hate the thing.... give me php/powershell/batch/anything pretty much, but vB scripts seem [to me at least] to be the devil brought to life in scripty form. hehe

I found it fairly easy to do - though you need a clean, un configured install of WSUS for it to work correctly - windows-noob.com has all the answers

The other great thing is that once it's done, you are in complete control of updates - they dont deploy until you tell them to...

Yeah, i know all this, but alas, I was told not to set up another WSUS server just for SCCM etc.... but we digress

working a treat at the moment - only 1 failure due to low disk space (my machine - doh).

SCCM power management wakes the clients up at 7:50, wsus installs start at 7:55, machines done and nodding off by the time the users come along.

Next challenge - IE9 on Monday!
