Hello,

 

I have one DHCP on one LAN and I want to create two scopes, one for the users PCs and one for the Virtual Machines. The question is how do I make the DHCP server "know" what IPs to offer to the users and what to the VMs???

 

Keep in mind that the server is 2003, because for 2008 I have found a patch.

You could VLAN them off separately ?

 

other than that do you really need DHCP for the VM's, could you not statically assign them?

I don't know how you can without some sort of router to achieve this. Well, i say router, you need to differentiate the 2 subnets and be able to route the requests so what you use is up to you, layer3 switch for example.

The interfaces on the router will be int1 -192.168.1.254 and int2 will be 192.168.2.254 with a mask of 255.255.255.0 You will need to specify a ip helper address which will be your DHCP server. Scope 1 will issue 192.168.1 addresses and scope 2 will issue 192.168.2 addresses.

 

Scope options will need to have the router specified as 192.168.1.254 on the Scope1 and 192.168.2.254

 

This will be the default gateway for the clients and ensures they come in on that interface say to speak.

 

You client PC's will broadcast for an IP address and it will be passed to the router who passes it to the DHCP server (that's because you've set the IP Helper address on that interface!) who know's what subnet the request came from and issues the relevant scope address.

I think you can do it with the vendor specific options on the scopes, but It's really outside my knowledge. Vlan's is the best way to go, keeping the VM's and desktops seperate has very few downsides

u can easly create two scope on the DHCP server and on the same active directory but with a different network id but remmeber that you have to reserve the ip's for the vm machines if there is any servers
