20K and all the chicken you can eat?

You often see on this forum that schools seem to think they can get the moon for a pittance when it comes to IT. Well the commercial sector is not completely immune from this delusion either.

 

I recently saw an advert for a Systems Co-ordinator/Network Administrator to work in a poultry processing comany. For a salary of £20,000 p.a. they want someone who has masters degree in Networking, sound knowlegde of accounting or finance with experience of the Sage Line 50 accounts package and be conversant in some foriegn languages.

 

In the role you'd be expected to coordinate with the Accounts and Sales department where you would manage and integrate a production and weighting system with the accounts package.

All this while managing the company network and providing IT support.

 

Now I know the job is in Preston and that the cost of living is meant to be cheaper up north but 20K! Come on! For someone with a Masters? Unless they confused an MCSE with an MSc

I remember several years ago Preston Borough Council (as it was back then) wanted an MCSE to run their network, full time. For 9k pa.

I thought it was a missprint. This was in 2000.

Its true unfortunately people undervalue the work that's involved in the IT sector public or private sector.

You do get the opposite though and that's what ruins it for the rest of the technical jobs out there 50K or more as project manager for instance makes sure that the average salary is disproportionate!
