His hand wasn't severed. He suffered compound fractures to his right elbow, shoulder and leg, as well as significant loss of blood. Doctor's dismissed that he'd need his hand amputating.

I just glanced at the new posts part of EduGeek, and saw a thread titled Robert Kubica and another titled Server Just Died!

 

At a glance it looked like Robert Kubica Just Died! and I had to think/re-read the thread titles lol

His hand was partially severed and crushed, the initial surgery was to stop the internal bleeding and reconstruct his hand as he would've lost it if they couldn't repair the blood supply going to it pretty sharpish. He's got further surgery to come to fix his elbox, shoulder and leg.
