MAJOR ISSUE - HELP ASAP - BACKUP EXEC QUESTION

Hi guys,

 

FILE SEVER GO BYE BYE. Up all night on a rescue mission. All fairly successful apart from;

 

Thursdays full backup all ok, no problems.

 

Friday failed (due to the server issue). The backup job comprises of backing up 3 drives. It failed on one so the entire job is classed as failed. But, it did successfully backup the files i'm wanting to get back urgently. But as the 'job failed', it doesn't give me the option to restore from it. Is there a way I can just restore the successful drive even though the 'job' failed?

 

Does that make sense?

 

Server 2003. BackupExec 11d on a 1Tb SAS tape.

 

This bit is funny...it went tits up on the final reboot after dcpromo. Demoted it from AD, rebooted to copy over data to new server...only it didn't reboot. 8 hours buggering around it boots. The new server sitting on bench ready to move across today. The little bugger knew I was going to kill it - so it jumped before I had the chance!

 

If I can get that extra day back it would be super bloody duper.

What are the implications and benefits? Will I be able to partially restore a ailed backup job?

From memory... can you right-click on the drive in backup exec and do a catalog job? you should then be able to right-click and do a restore.

Depends why the job failed really. If the tape failed you might not have a readable catalogue on the tape. If you re-catalogue this should create a readable catalogue on disk.

 

There's an option in BE13 to restore corrupt files (Settings/General) but don't know if that exists in BE11d.

I just recatalogued. It is not coming up with Fridays date as an option. Basically, when I finally got it into windows this morning, I was sorting out the backup mess and it started to run last nights/todays backup with the same tape in. I stopped it as soon as I realised, it did one folder and 4 files. Is it that that has buggered it?

 

Should I try downloading a trial version of the latest backupexec?

Sounds like you've overwritten Friday's backup. If that's the case then I imagine there will be little chance, if any, of recovering it easily (if at all).

I was hoping there would be some kind of recovery software for tape. But no luck. Can't find any.

Bit late possibly, but on the restore screen, rather then trying to Restore by Resource, try Restore by Media, locate the media files which contain the files you want and trying to restore them that way.

 

Still might not work, but might be worth a shot (going off version 12.5, so might be different in 11)
