Quick question:

 

The new MS EES is costed per FTE staff, not computers.

 

Does this mean that we can have any number of virtual machines with Win 7 + Office 2010 at virtually no cost?

 

I hope I'm right.

You'll be wanting to look at Microsoft Windows Enterprise: Operating system virtualization, but essentially no it's not quite that simple . There are a few other MS licenses that you'd also need that soon push the price up!

If you exclude the considerations for any virtual infrastructure, it is true that under EES you only pay for desktop platform products, such as the Windows 7 upgrade and Microsoft Office according to your FTE count. You can then install these products on all your desktops/laptops/virtual desktops etc. It is assumed the number of FTEs is smaller than the number of devices....Microsoft hope you will re-invest the cost savings into other IT projects!
