We are running a server 2008 R2 file server which stores all user data. We do not use sharepoint, we use Studywiz for our VLE.

We are looking to make it possible for students to access their files and folders from home, but not via Remote Desktop.

What solution are you using?

Same here. We mount a share on the Studywiz box to the students home directories, and then map their eLocker to the appropriate place.

Caveats: get the files currently in the eLocker out before you do the mapping, or you'll never see them again; and be aware that Studywiz can't deal with trees more than three levels deep in this way (where the eLocker is level 0).

It is expensive, but we are using Synetrix Secure Remote Access and it works pretty well. The RDP ports on our terminal server are not open to the outside world, and is good because during school hours we use our Terminal Server for the thin clients to connect, and out of school timetable teacheres/students can logon from home and see exactly the same interface (shared areas included) that the use at home.

We have been using it for a couple of years and not a single regreat.

You could look at adito/open vpn als provides access to the shares in a web browser via HTTP. You can also setup rdp for selected users - setup via ad groups.

Are you using Studywiz eLocker Mapping? I have seen on the Studywiz website that this is an extra.

Oh. I don't think so, but I don't deal with money much. We've had Studywiz for years though, so maybe it was bundled when we bought it.

Hope you've got user CALs for that...
