Can anyone recommend a NAS for home use

I'd like it to be 1TB maybe 2 as i would like one that can mirror maybe. Use it to stream to XBOX and use with iTunes is important.

 

Was looking at the NetGear FreeNAS but wondering if anyone has one that they recommend.

I would recommend looking at the QNAP Range Kaz, QNAP Systems, Inc. - Quality Network Appliance Provider look at the home range! nice and cheap

I got me one of these...

It has everything you might need and some, built in bit torrent client, time machine support, AD support, iTunes server but best of all built in BlueRay (DVD if you want the cheaper option) to back stuff up to.

 

The BlueRay has iscsi support to I use it as a target for my net book and it appears as a local BlueRay Rewriter totally awesome... It sits in the front room with the AV and is totally silent.

 

Buy it fully populated or empty and put your own drives in. Have not tested it with 3TB drives yet though.

I have been using an IOMEGA for the last year and no problems, although there are probably better available by now.

I have a readynas and can highly recommend it. A HP microserver (I think the £100 cashback is still valid on the new model) and installing freenas on it may be another option to consider.

Completely fanless and silent, with 3 eSATA ports (and, with the new model, USB 3) to attach whatever external drive boxes (also fanless) you like. I run Debian on mine, but you could run OpenFiler or Windows Home Server.

If i remember right, to make the NAS work with say an XBOX, you will need to make sure the NAS has UPnP/DLNA. But personaly im a recycler, old pc pop a few new drived in and install FreeNAS.

I have a qnap 210 best bit of kit for the home I have. Use it for iTunes and upnp. Works really well with the wd live players which i have 2 of and they also have a iPhone and iPad app

Cheers guys. This is going to replace an ancient 2k3 box im currently using. It's over 10 years old bless it (first computer i properly built myself lol). I feel its probably costing me a fortune to have it on constantly.

If you want to replace home server you might like the Acer Aspire Revo R3610 I have one running server 2008 and exchange 2010. Though, i know someone who has same pc but installed windows home server, benefit being home server has a good backup service.

I have just bought a DLINK DNS-323 and its really good. It has 2 bays to allow for raid 1, media server, itunes server, print server, ftp server. Then all you have to do is buy 2 hard drives of whatever capacity you want to go in it.
