How does M$ licensing work? Let's say we have 3 x 2003 servers, and currently have all the necessary cals for our clients to connect etc.

But we want to update to 2008 for the servers - do we have to purchase new cals? If so it'll be 300 machines x price per cal. Is that it, or do I then have to multiply that by the number of servers?

i.e. is it:

a) number of machines x price per cal

b) number of machines x price per cal x number of servers

Can somebody clarify?

Depends on how you lisence, I think that 2008 is only per seat rather than per server. You will need new CALs from 2003 to 2008 but not from 2008 to 2008 r2.

If you use per seat cals then you just need a cal for each device which will cover you for however many servers you have locally.
