Hi All,

 

I am looking to setup a Windows XP professional as a DHCP server.

 

The box has two network cards; one connected to the domain and one that I want to use as to provide addresses to a number of computers that are attached.

 

Does anybody know of a way of configuring XP pro as a DHCP server, on a specific network card? The intention is for this to become a PXE boot server on a local network.

I dont think XP includes a DHCP server service, so you might be better running a free one. Something like Download Tiny DHCP Server Freeware - Tiny Dhcp service for Windows. maybe - although I'm not sure if you can tell it to just listen+respond on a specific network internet

 

If you're using it for PXE, you might also need enough flexibility to configure attributes like TFTP server addresses

If its for PXE then take a look at TFTPD32. you can use it to boot to PXE and use an existing DHCP server. Ive used it with Partimage before. i haven't used it in a long time though but i'm sure someone else on here must know a bit more about it than me.

I use tftpd32 as the dhcp & pxe boot for bare metal restore as part of my dr plan.

Thankyou for your advice so far.

 

I have tried both apps mentioned. The Tiny DHCP Server doesn't seem to support PXE boot as part of the app (as is suggested in the post). This would be a desirable feature.

 

The tftpd32 doesn't seem to work correctly. I cannot set static IP addresses (Following the instructions that are given by the developers).

Why not use a server OS in the 1st place?

 

What are you going to do with the PXE boot clients?

The reason Im not using a server OS in the first place is because it is a test machine, and a requirement of that test machine is it only have XP pro on it.

 

Maybe I need to get another machine in place running the server OS. However, I am currently looking into an alternative solution. I am looking at system restore software, in particular Comodo Time Machine, and evaluating if that can restore the disk to its state upon boot. Then I can use a simple hard drive copy to transfer the OS to another HDD.
