Downloading WebMail attachments

Morning all,

We seem to be having an intermittent (aren’t those always the best) issue that effects downloading attachments from WebMail sites, we have tested it with Yahoo and the Rm Easymail sites and get similar results. It doesn’t affect all of our users, but seems to be restricted to Staff accounts.

When a user logs into their webmail, clicks on an email and then tries to download an attachment they get the choice to either save or open. I would say 2 or 3 times out of 10 it will work, and the file will download fine, the rest of the time the download box will just display this;

If you have selected Save, it doesn’t ask you where you want to save. It’s as if its waiting for a program or something to tell it what to do. It seems to effect any file type, we have experienced it with .doc, .docx, .pdf, .xls, .xlsx and .pub. It seems to take a second or two to kick in aswel, if you go and download a file as soon as your logged in it might work, but if you leave it a while it won’t.

It seems to be effecting laptop users who are off the domain, and domain computers. It might hace something to do with our staff username format (e.g. b.wykeham.33161). We have had issues before with Adobe Premiere Elements not liking the .33161 on the end. I can’t imagine why this causes an issue, but we managed to get around it.

 

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

I apologise if this seems very vague, but I am not sure how else to describe such an intermittent problem!!!

Is this restricted to IE or does it happen in other browsers too?

Ahh yeh, should have mentioned. It seems to be only IE, predicatibly. As a quick workaround we have put some users onto FireFox and its all good. We dont, however, want to push this out to our domain users

Does zip work?

If so then what version of office are you running?

No, Zip files are the same. So are .wmv, .txt

It does seem to be more related to Office files though.... It seems fine ish most of the time, but ive only ever expreienced it sticking on an Office file. It will then refuse to open anything. We are using Office 2007, on XP.
