We had a video, thou it was paid for by a very kind relative. The best bit was video messages to us from the guests.

I asked a friend of mine/my family to do the photography for my wedding, he has it as a hobby/side job with aim of doing it after he retires/leaves his main job.

 

He was fantastic, and never got in the way of the main cerimony, in fact I barely saw him for the day, beyond the staged photo's.

What I didn't know at the time, was his wife, who helps him a lot in this, had a video camera, and video'd the whole ceremony, the speeches, and I believe the first dance too.

We found out when they presented it as a wedding present.

 

He only charged us the cost of 2 meals (him and his wife) for the day's work, then a cost per photo that we got printed afterwards, but he made DVD's for all my family and a catalog to order them from him, and the dvd had 6x4 quality prints.

 

A wedding i went to recently, they paid a lot of money for a photographer, and video etc. I found them to be intrusive, pretty much putting a camera wherever they liked, and I found the people rude when they were setting up staged photo's.

 

I've looked through the photo's once or twice, but never watched the video.

 

The wife clammered to watch it when we got back from honeymoon, but i simply pointed out, "I remember the day well enough still, I don't need to watch it again now."

 

I'll watch it someday, and it'll be good for future kids/generations/family to be able to see it.

 

It's not just boasting, as I was told by pretty much everyone who was at it, that my wedding was one of the best weddings they'd ever been to!

Same sort of situation here. The woman who made our cake said her husband did photography as a hobby. He came round, showed us some pics he'd done and they were awesome. He charged us £250 for the whole day (was there from 10am til 11pm), took nearly 2000 pix in total, and was fantastic. He didnt do printing costs or anything, he just put all the unedited raw pics on dvd's for us which we preferred as we can then print the ones we wanted at a lower cost.

we got 7 dvd's of unedited pics, 2 dvds of edited pics where he'd done black and white effects, montages etc and a couple of A3 prints just because he wanted to see how they came out. considering some official places charge a lot extra for the original dvd disks i think we got a bargain

 

I ended up resizing some of the ones we liked most, and got them online in an album to let family look at, and those that wanted copies just got copies of the disk to choose the pics they wanted and sop aroud for best photo print prices.

as you said, a lot better than official ones i think. have been to one wedding where the official photog took 3 hours to do staged pics, another wedding where they were there from 10 til 2 and got about 100 photos (all at funky angles). i think if its something you are passionate about, rather than it just being a job then you put more attention to detail to it
