software failure

We have a Laptop that could not boot, when I load the safe mode the list of drivers etc stops at MFEHIDK.SYS and will not go any further!

 

Running XP-pro SP3 on an Latitude 120L

 

Any ideas - please!

Have you tried repairing your installation of Windows?

Yes but I get the same answer - when you get to MFEHIDK.SYS it stops!

I guess you could extract the hard disk and manually copy this file from another workstation.

Try a selective startup (F8 while booting) and see if you can get in to safe mode without loading that file. It's a McAfee driver so chances are the McAfee install has f-ed something up - if you can get in to safe mode that way, uninstall McAfee and try booting again.

Thanks for your help - I think a best way is the leave the machine overnight and have a look tommorow (or better still a hammer!!!!)

I had this error last week and tried the McAfee fix with no luck. In the end I re-installed OS.

Thank you to everyone - I had to re-install the OS!!!

 

The machine is now well until the next time!
