DanL Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Hey, I got my sister a XP netbook for Christmas but for some reason it can't pick up the wireless network. It can pick up others but not ours for some reason. My own laptop which is running Windows 7 can pick it up fine. Any ideas?

Michael Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 If it's a new netbook, it should discover WPA2 networks. On older machines, the wireless driver needs updating so I doubt this is the problem. As for 3G, this is something separate and cannot be used to connect to your local wireless LAN. 3G connects to your local mobile phone mast, as if you were making a phone call. All netbooks have integrated wireless adapters, so I suspect the problem is the channel as chazzy2501 mentioned. You can change this by signing into your router via a browser, typically 192.168.1.1 and manually change it to 1, 6 or 11.

The router says it's 802.11b/g/n and the netbooks driver says it's 802.11bgn. I'm 100% sure it's nothing to do with the fact we are using WPA2 as it finds other WPA2 networks and even changing it to open makes no difference.
Michael Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Is MAC address filtering enabled on the router? And on some routers the number of IPs available to DHCP might be restricted to 10, when usually a class c network can handle over 200 devices at once.
