why not use the messenger version of Remote Assistance, it worked for me (although the distance wasn't quite as far....)

Try downloading the console version of VNC called 'VNCon', this allows you to remotely install VNC, to date only tried on a network, but you can give it a try if all else fails. Or you could get the user at the other end to download and install 'LogMeIn', just google it to find out more, it does require some client config like, so the user will have to be comp savvy to an extent!

That will connect you to the existing session (this is assuming he's running windows and has remote access enabled.

 

I've always found VNC to be slow over the internet. But maybe that's just me.

That assumes two things:

 

1) The person who you're helping doesn't mind that they can't see whats going on. Whenever ypu connect to a Windows XP session via RDP or a Win2k3 console, the user on the PC is locked out.

2) That they're using XP Pro or MCE or Vista Business/Enterprise/Ultimate. XP Home and the Vista home editions don't have that facility.

 

For this sort of problem, you're better off using Remote Assistance.

Definately. But that's assuming that they are using Windows Live Messenger and have remote assistance enabled. But yes...it's the way with the least hassle.

 

I've never been able to get it to work to tell you the truth.

You don't need Live Messenger for Remote Assistance, the built in Windows Messenger will do it. If you don't have an MS Passport or don't want to use the Live network at all, the invitation can be emailed. And enabling Remote Assistance is just a matter of ticking a box.

 

I've used it many times, both for work colleagues and for family.

The /console switch only works on Windows 2003 server.

What about using something like LOGMEIN.COM. I only used it a couple of times but it worked really well. Basic service was free when I tried it.

Eh? why do you need that switch as you limited to one session in XP anyway i.e. you take over the console session if you use MSTSC.

Why not give logmein a go?

 

For the schools we have problems connecting to using VNC, logmein does the trick.
