Smoothwall Express with the dansgaurdian/advanced p r 0 x y addon? Express Open Source Firewall Project

K9 web protection?

Smoothwall requires a computer to run on (and will filter traffic from any device connected to the network on which the SW box is located), but k9 will only run on the computers and not the ipods.

The ipod touch has parental controls as well - iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch: Understanding Restrictions but these cannot filter websites accessed by the safari browser.

In your situation Id say yes. You can run a proxy with 1 NIC, but you need 2 NICs for a router. For transpartent filtering you will need your proxy to reside on your router. A P4 with 256mb ram will be ample.

id run it as a proxy server then. but there 2 routers set up due to poor building. (netgear and dlink) but they run though the same modem (virgin media)

I've never used it with just 1 nic, but I can't see why it wouldn't work (although as above, you wouldn't be able to use the transparent proxy feature). I have had Smoothwall Express (3) with dansguardian/advanced proxy and several other services all running fine on a P3 with 384mb ram in the past.

The problem with that is you will either need to;

Alter all the devices and add the proxy settings, and then block all web traffic to your router other than from your proxy. This wont work for most android devices as you cant add proxy settings to them. IIRC none of teh turnkey router platforms will do this without some alteration. Shouldn't be a massive problem, either that or just build your own which isnt too hard.

Or set up some fancy rules to pass all web traffic from the router to the proxy, and then back through the router.

Im out of my comfort zone here as I've never done it but Id guess the next step is to remove all routing from the iptables. Also does SW support DG out of box? I don't think it does does it... you'll need the addon.
