I take it you mean the SIMS share? :

No, but a lot of people will just do it that way.

Also need control of local C drive folders, sims, windows/temp . . .

 

One way to solve is to run simsperm.bat , others assign the permissions via group policy.

Right, im having a bit of a moment. So SIMSPERM.BAT *snigger* gives certain access rights to the user. So if i was to run S:\SIMS\Setups\simsperm.bat domain\MIS it'll work for everyone that is part of the MIS group? Or do i have to to if for every member of staff who may take a register on this machine?

i believe you can do it for the whole group, and it works, however it needs doing on each PC.

try it on one to be sure it's working, as i said, i've never used it.

@Little-Miss - I found it easier to ignore SIMSPERM.BAT all together

All I did was create a GPO that gave full control of the C:\Program files\SIMS folder to members of DOMAIN\MIS-Users group..

 

This is technically all that SIMSPERM.BAT does anyway..

 

As for share/NTFS permissions on th S: Drive I did:

 

Share - Everyone = Read Only

NTFS - MIS-Users = Full Control

SIMSPerm.bat needs to be run on every workstation.



Who Can Run SIMSPerm.bat?

 

Only Local Administrators can run SIMSPerm.bat.

What Will Happen if I Do Not Run SIMSPerm.bat?

 

Running SIMSPerm.bat is the easiest way and the recommended way of achieving the appropriate level of access rights in order to use SIMS .net modules. If you do not run SIMSPerm.bat, you will have to ensure that every user has been granted system administrator access rights before they can run upgrades to SIMS .net.

 

 

In Addition to running SIMSPerm.bat, users on the workstation will require full control of the following locations:

Local Settings\Temp

Windows\Temp

My Documents

Windows\SIMS.ini

SIMS .net folder (usually located in C:\Program Files\SIMS\)

S:\SIMS (where S:\ is the mapped folder)

 

The temp and other folders are required when it links in to office and assessment does jazzy stuff, plus other processes no doubt.

 

I'm still trying to fix an issue with our profiles on windows 7, having the app data redirected appears to cause a few errors.

Hmm.. I never had to set properties on the Temp Dir, and users should already have enough permissions on their My Docs / Home Folders anyway

 

I just did a GPO for the \Program Files\SIMS\ and the \WINDOWS\Sims.ini

Eugh!

 

All i wanna do i install it on 21 machines without all this faffing with permissions!

 

So not only do i need to run that silly named bat but i also have to change permissions manually?

 

Never done a GPO to change permissions before :S

Has anyone got a step by step on how to do this on a vanilla 2k3 network and XP clients, im getting fed up now....

 

Stupid thing is still taking ages to load and when you look at the installation log it has an entry each time for the server installation.

Are you sure you're running as administrator? it shouldn't need to keep installing, it implies the changes are not saving to the right file / places so it keeps thinking it needs to update something.

 

How do you do the install on the admin side? Who does it? It should be the same process, the only difference would be any permissions you've got set on the curriculum side that may be different, and possible dns/network traffic issues.

 

We've pretty much got the step by step in this thread, it's just troubleshooting now.

lol! What uber confusing is out of the two workstations im testing this on, one works perfectly but i dont think i did anything different....argh!

 

Are they identical spec' + installations?

You probably don't want to hear this, but often worth trying the whole lot again. Maybe this time, sort the permissions on the non-sims workstation. then go through and do the install.

 

If you want to do a reinstall. You need to remove simsinfrastructure from control panel, and rename / delete the local folders on the C drive. Then re-run simsinst.exe

Worth checking performance of dodgy machine in other aspects i.e. network connectivity, server access, dns resolving, all these things can slow down the performance and wrongly give sims the blame.

Ooh, think i might have cracked it.

 

When i load it on a normal teacher account it loads up ok. Is there anything i need to check to make sure its all ok? Or is the fact its running a good thing! lol

Well done sweetie.

I would do a search for student details.

Open linked documents if there are reports there...? to make sure the link to document storage is working.

Try to access the register, if that's available now, am/pm.
