[sims] After moving Document Server, attached files don't open

I've successfully-ish moved my Document Server to it's new home but when I try to open an attached file in SIMS it pops up a message saying that it will be opebed read only and then insists that I save it.

 

This happens if I press 'View' or 'Open'.

 

I can see people being a little bothered by this in January!

I would guess that your Document Server isn't pointing to the correct location for Docstorage. Have you tried the following:

Edited the computer name in Tools\Setups\Document management server?

Ran DMConfig on the original machine to make sure you're copying the correct Docstorage folder to the new server?

Modified Docstorage subfolder to match the new Server Name?

Also, it may be too late for this but when moving SIMS I always advise NOT importing predefined reports otherwise it's more difficult to diagnose any potential problems.

Ric_, what are the permissions on the DocStorage folder? This has got me in the past

I've got a sql script to give you the report filename if you need it. Normally opening cmd and running dmconfig (in program files\sims\sims .net document server), displays the fault - wrong docstorage folder set) or the folder name didn't get changed when the server name did.

Isn't this normal behavior for certain documents in sims. Most of our teachers open things read only. It shouldn't be a doc store mapping issue if you can open files. Check doc store permissions on old server and also try making and linking your own doc. Also try uploading a report as the built in upload has a different permission.

Right... back to my problem

 

The dmconfig command gives the following info:

Protocol: http
Port: 8080
Directory: D:\DOCSTORAGE

 

This config is as expected.

 

My SIMS server is imaginatively names SIMS2008 and the structure of the D:\DOCSTORAGE folder is thus:

 

D:\DocStorage\SIMS2008\SIMS2008\SIMS\

 

My SIMS database is named SIMS and is on the named instance SIMS2008 (ie. SIMS2008\SIMS2008)

 

I'm guessing something is wrong

I thought it seemed right (especially given that SIMS created most of the structure).

 

It just saves empty documents though after displaying a prompt saying that the file will be opened read only.

Obvious, but security on the folders is all correct? Nothing blocking the creation of files?

Shouldn't your first 'SIMS2008' be the name of the windows server or am I understanding you wrong?

 

EDIT: i.e. Computer name not SQL name

Have you got/run the latsest doc storage installer, again obvious but just checking the basics.

ric, i still say try putting office on the server, just to test on a snapshot.

Ric, did you run dmconfig on the original server to make sure you'd copied the docstorage from the right place? I've seen multiple copies of docstorage before and the duff one's been copied by mistake.

Arrrrgggghhhh.... you know when you're testing things and you do it over and over and get nowhere? Well I just had the genius idea of trying a different document. And it worked!!!

 

So that's approx. a day's worth of time that I'm never getting back just because somebody uploaded a broken file to SIMS!.

NUMPTY! I asked you twice yesterday on facebook chat if it was the case with all documents, and to try a report too. Well, if you wont listen because a pint is calling then it's your own mess! Don't blame the MIS.
