Hi I am looking to setup sharepoint for our intranet/extranet within schoo, to be able to gain access from outside what do I need? Isa server?

You can customize the appearance of quite easily Sharepoint and Sharepoint-like things you might want to do (usually around lists, document libraries and workflows) is a very good tool.

 

There are problems about personalization in some respects - the moment they begin to do things other than the "Sharepoint Road" (which is often necessary to fairly common things you might want to do) can be found running in circles, jump through many hoops and generally have to go to C, D, H, J, Q and Z before you can get from A to B. Fortunately, a fairly mature product as it is now, you can often find blogs covering the issues that are difficult or commercially available web parts that can be licensed instead of writing your own. For some standard things (Sharepoint wikis are attrocious, for example) may be better to use a licensed component of the construction site in regardless.

 

Sharepoint can also behave quite inexplicable, if you're thinking about using different types of user authentication for intranet and extranet users you want to see up close how best to implement it. Not impossible, by any means, but difficult.

 

In general I think SharePoint is a very good platform and it is worth considering seriously. It is almost certainly better than starting from scratch and probably good enough for what you need, but definitely should do some evaluation and prototyping before committing themselves.

 

Note that to get the best of Sharepoint 2010 will all have installed Office 2010 as well.

First thing you must do is plan... PLAN PLAN PLAN!

 

Ensure you know what it is you want, speak to stakeholders within your school, go visit other schools who have done this already to get tips and advice.

 

Before you get anywhere near hardware requirements you'll need to decide these things because depending on types of usage, and volume of usage, this will somewhat dictate your server requirements.

we use a simple port forward and sub domain ie http://intanet.domain.com setup up a siple home page with details for users and a log on button that links to external ip plus port (so they dont need to remember ip adresses , also i can change ip without needing to tell them) then the AD box pops up for authentication no different to OWA really.

Yup! Make sure you do this, you will be suprised what staff upload and if it's not secure and something happens you would be in the firing line! simple configuration but goes along way in the future.

 

One of the main things to do is to Plan your deployment, the initial installation and configuration and then how you are going to structure the site to fit your schools requirements along with deployment and implementation.

I am guessing your going to be using SharePoint 2010?

Just install 2010 and set it all up then give it an external IP with basic authentication. You can spend ages with the different authentication types and make things overly complicated.

 

Sharepoint is just a website at the end of the day.
