Schools seem obsessed with having Microsoft Office available, so I'd aim for an OS capable of running a browser with Flash, Java and so on and an RDP client, run as a browser plugin, for those times when you just can't get away from having to run MS Office / SIMS / some random bit of educational software. It does seem odd that it's taking Google another six months to produce as it sounds like the kind of thing you could knock out with a customised Ubuntu distribution in a couple of days. What, exactly, does ChromeOS do that a Linux boot CD that loads a browser doesn't - wasn't there some mention of extra hardware requirements?

Well a couple of hours later and my download fails at 80% and won't restart *&^%ing easy-share...in short then. I won't be trying ChromeOS until they get iso hosting sorted.

it will likely be tied to certain hardware, in the same android is and so there will work out of the box on the hardware it's install on. It loks likes it's not designed to be run on a homebrew machine. It will also likely have a smaller footprint and own't allow you to install extra programs into the os, repos etc. So it will be a standard system.

 

This means that you can login to any chrome os machine and everything will just be there for you. Kind of like one giant roaming profile.

 

It also going to have some ties with a citrix type thing that will allow normal fat client apps to run on it in a virtual kind of way (details on this are sketchy) - but that's the nod to those that insist on running office.

 

also guys bear in mind that there are no official release of chrome os at the moment. All the available isos have been built from the available open source code
