strange printer problem

W have a small HP laserjet 1022n in our office and cant seem to get it to work properly.

 

I have plugged it in correctly, added it to one of our 32bit 2003 severs, installed the drivers and it still wont work. The strange part is that I can print from the server to the printer no problems.

 

When I print from my workstation which is 32bit XP pro, the job just hangs in the queue.

 

Anyone got any ideas?

Why can I still print from the server if the drivers are at fault?

Im thinking windows server will have the windows server drivers installed but not the XP drivers

 

If you right click on the printer on the server, click properties then on the Sharing Tab, click Additional Drivers... make sure there are some drivers in there for XP

It says that the drivers for server 2003 and XP are the same.

Ive just looked up that model, I am assuming that you have set it up as an IP printer, if this is the case then try installing the printer on the XP system seperately first to see if this works first.

 

After that try pinging the printer for both machines..

 

Try disabling di-directional printing...

With some hp printer drivers theres a button that says allow monitoring of shared printers. This wierdly allows the locally installed printer to be shared accross the network.

Glad you got your problem sorting out - its quite a common thing with HP network printers, oh the good old days... wait until you upgrade or work somewhere with follow-me printing, that is serious headache printing!

Forgive my ignorance, what do you mean by "follow-me" printing??

You only have one printer to print to as an end user, but then you can go to ANY printer in the school swipe your RFID card and then your print jobs come out of the printer you are standing at.

that sounds like a good way of cutting down on people not collecting printouts nit not being printed till user (or at least their card) appears at the printer

that sound really useful. Do you use that at your work Dageezah? What equipment do you need for that?

We have 8 Ricoh printers with RFID usb scanner units on them (you can use codes on the keypad if you dont have the cash for a card unit) then the rest is all software, we use Equitrac.

Forgive my ignorance, what do you mean by "follow-me" printing??

Not sure if it is just Ricoh or if other companies ( copier / printer companies in specific ) use this type of system but it is basically a virtual printer que and when anyone with a valid swipe card goes upto said device ( copier or printer ) that has a swipe card reader attached to it, it will release the job that the said user printed from there pc - regardless of where the copier, printer is located as all printers use the one virtual printer que.

 

Hence the name follow me printing
