Monitor individuals internet connection

I've been asked to monitor the internet connection of an individual member of staff. Discretely. No accusation of dodgy sites, just non-work related for a specific amount of time. Any (free + quick) software out there that will just sit in the background and do this for me, prefereably MSI deployable. Proxy is council run so reading proxy logs are out of the question. Failing that i'm stuck with taking copies of Internet History .dat files.

You can install a 30 day free trial of ABTutor, and enable a policy to log all websites visited. You can also set it up to take snapshots when certain keywords are pressed. Would rely on the user using the same machine though.

quick install of a squid/dansguardian proxy on an old desktop pc which forwards to council proxy redirect only that users internet through it?

Both the above methods would work fine. However, you need to consider the legal aspects of this. Has this member of staff been informed that their internet connection may be monitored, and why it may be monitored? (eg. in your AUP or via a splash box on the login screen saying it)?

 

If not, then you might get into hot water doing this.

that would be for a disciplinary tribunal - its the same as viewing websites which can be deemed inappropriate by others
