We have one laptop which basically had a problem booting into windows. It said that the the system32\config file was missing or corrupt. So we did a fixMBR and a repair install and managed to get it working. We tried running sims but it would not run even efter many re-install of SIMS.

So i decided to run system restore and restore the laptop back to when it was working right. The restore worked fine but still had problems running SIMS. I narrowed it down to .net framework not running correctly, so i tried to re-install this but to no avail.

I have taken off all .net framework programs and am now trying to do a windows update but i am getting an error trying to download the MS updater.

I have checked BITS and Automatic Updates and i am able ot restart/stop/start the services without any problems.

I have narrowed it down to the dll files. I cannot register the following files:

qmgr.dll

wuaueng.dll

These files give an error of failed to install with the return code: 0x80070005

and these files failed as the specified module could not be found:

wucltux.dll

wups.dll

wuwebv.dll

Does anyone know how to fix this or would the best thing to do, backup all the data and wipe it with a new install?

Thanks

Might be worth running a chkdsk on it from the recovery console - quite often I find it can fix the missing/corrupt file errors if you really need the computer up and running rather then rebuilding.

If thats the case I would try a new hard drive :)
