No Drive letter for USB stick?

Got a strange problem, memory stick inserting PC, windows recognises new hardware and reports working OK. Check Device Manager and its there with no errors, but does not appear in explorer or in Disk Management?

Any ideas how to get it to appear as a drive so I can get info from it?

at a guess has it tried to use the same drive letter as a network drive (ive seen this with sims systems that use f: ) using disk manager to change ikts letter will work for that drive or something like usbdlm will force all pen drives to have whatever letters you want

You could just open Disk Management and check to make sure it has not been given the same letter as a network drive mapping. This happens all the time here, due to having some network drives mapped to letters like H and I.

That's where usbdlm comes into its own. I install it automatically on all new kit and the network drive letters are then never allocated by accident.

That's where usbdlm comes into its own. I install it automatically on all new kit and the network drive letters are then never allocated by accident.

 

It also lets you configure card readers so they only grab letter when a card is inserted.

Quickest way I find, is to simply disconnect all your mapped network drives, then insert the USB drive. Usually find a mapped drive has taken the drive allocation, and the USB stick therefore cannot be assigned a drive letter (as someone else pointed out further up). If you can get the stick recognised this way, then you can simply assign it a new drive letter, reconnect all your drives, and off you go. 3rd party software such as USBDLM is great for the longer term though.

Sorry, tried USBDLM and no joy, not in Drive manager as a networked drive either, logged on locally so just basic PC drives. Even tried using Ubuntu on a CD ad it did not appear in the Computer window which shows floppy drives etc. Maybe its just had it?
