32bit XP printer Drivers HELP

Hello all,

I am having major problems installing XP 32 bit drivers to my 2008 R2 server. I have two printers, LaserJet 2700 and a LaserJet 4100. There is a simple VBS script to install the printers on the workstation at login. It seems to have worked ok with a test Windows 7 32bit machine, but I have a feeling Win7 has loaded the driver and it has not come from the server.

 

I know I need to load the XP 32bit drivers and have downloaded both the "driver only" and the Universal Print driver but I cant get R2 to load them via "Print Management > Mange Sharing > Addition Drivers and ticking X86 and pointing to the un-packed driver. This produces an error telling me the location does not contain driver for the requested processor architecture.

 

I have install the printer has a local printer on a test XP client, then created a new printer port which pointed to the printer share (\\server\Laserjet2700), that works OK, but I feel it picking up the driver locally. I cant do that for all 55 PC's !!

 

So after reading lots of pages on the internet I am none the wiser - Some pages state there is a way of installing it locally and then uploading it to the server?? Anyone know the secret??

yuo might want to check the exact box it pops up as it often asks for the x86 ntprint.inf before the actual driver

i can never understand why people have a problem with this or suggest adding the driver from a workstation.??? I just added the driver via additional drivers straight on the server, job done! I'm not suggesting your not having problems, just 've never seen it myself?

You need to make sure you have the same version and breed of drivers on the server for both 32 and 64 bit on the system. The prefs are stored in a single file and so the drivers must be the same so the system can match them and work off the same prefs files.

 

Download the latest 64 and 32 bit drivers from the same source then install them both, this should let the whole thing work realitivly easily.

Thanks everyone for your help. Really, the advice is not to use the printer drivers that come with Server 2008 R2, but download the latest 64/32bit drivers from the manufactures web site and use them.
