Schools really need to shake up their pay scales. Going round schools this last month I have been amazed at the amount of people with excellent qualifications who are willing to work full-time for (some of them) £14,000 a year! All my mates have MCSEs, and their average wage is £30,000!!

Like most senior guys here, I hire off experiance rather than quals if the candidate has enough experiance that overrules any boot camp obtained quals.

That's the best paying job for a technician thats been seen around these parts for a while. Too many computer graduates with tons of qualifications and no jobs - I think his last technician had 2 PhDs If it wasn't for the fact the Roger prob doesn't want another old codger like himself - I'd be after it like a shot regards Simon

( I know its probably true, but not been called it in writing before) The reason the advert asked for MCSE etc, as a preference was to try and reduce/filter out the number of very low skill applicants we had last time, as you all know, the job requires a high degree of technical competence. Paper quals are just another tool along with experience to find the best person for the job. I had to work hard to persuade our SLT to pay that salary, they finally realised when my last technician left (who had paper quals and experience, but never intended to stay longer than 12mths, has gone to work for British Energy in Mechatronics at more than double his current salary) that to employ a comparable person you need to pay closer to industry rates. Unless we put forward a proper business case to SLT`s when we need to recruit to offer a decent salary, we will struggle to improve the lot of ICT Technicians!! Roger
