I've just installed Call of Duty Black Ops on my gaming PC.

 

TBH, it dont run great...and i think i might need to upgrade

 

My PC doesnt miss a beat with COD2, MW1, WAW or MW2....but, on Black Ops, there's some serious lag/stuttering.

 

Current spec is:

 

Intel e8400

Nvidia 8800GT

2GB RAM

Mobo is Asus P5Q

 

TBH, i've been waiting for this day to arrive...but, i thought it would be the release after Black Ops which would force me into an upgrade.

 

Current PC is 2 and a half years old, so i should have expected it tbh.

 

Would you recommend a full upgrade, or do you think one component could be the problem?

oooo...thanks for the link. What is mentioned in the article is true of my situation too. In high tempo parts of the game, its ok, but, in slower parts...lag lag lag lag

As a Bit of general advice - defrag the game cache in Steam (right click -> Properties) and make sure your Anti Virus has on Access scanning turned off for the game folder, see if that makes any difference.

I think it's time to upgrade. More and more games are going to struggle with a dual core processor. I know GTA: IV was much better with a quad core (and that game is almost two years old). Regarding Black Ops...

 

While I didn't have any problems playing the single-player portion of the game, there have been widespread reports of the sort of stuttering and low performance we saw in the multiplayer portion. This seems to be due to the game being CPU bound, which would explain why we didn't see any performance hit: the system I played on features a quad-core Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz chip overclocked to 4.0GHz. If you have a less capable machine, and who doesn't, you may run into some chop, even if you ran previous Call of Duty games adequately. Dual-core systems are going to have some problems, while anyone running a quad core should be fine. (Source)

Everything, but I would wait until the Core i5-2500K / Core i7-2600K and GeForce GTX 560/570 are released to make it worthwhile. :)

6950 and 6970 will be out before then mind ;) and the 6870 already runs it perfectly well, doesnt drop below 30fps at 2560x1600.

Is it possible to get a demo of the game and also will it run on windows xp?

You will be fine with XP, but I don't think there is a demo available yet.
