What do you install to allow video files to play on Windows Media Player?

 

Most 'codec packs' seem to come bundled with toolbars so they are ruled out. I have tried DirectShow Filter pack but that needs to run through setup whenever the user tries to play a video. I have the same problem with DivX and FFDshow.

 

Any ideas on how I can have a video just play rather than try to install codec's.

install VLC and play through that. it handles most codec.

Normally I would use VLC, however there is some special translation / subtitling software that is using the Windows Media Player Codec system (direct show?) to render the video.

 

I was thinking of having a look with GraphStudio to see what was going on under the hood.

That or use gspot to establish what the video file(s) require with regards to video and or audio codecs

 

GSpot Codec Information Appliance

 

From G spot you should be able to establish what codecs you need to install ie divx / xvid or whatever

I normally use the CCCP codec package at home on my windows xp machines.

CCCP works fine here, too, no toolbars, customizable install......does what it says on the tin.
