(Computer Offline)

Ive had a search thru and cant find anything that answers my question ..

 

Built a new laptop for the Head about a month ago and all was working well. About 3 days ago she told me she cant get on the web when she's at home. Been like this about a week, she says!

The short of it is, when at home it will connect to the home network but will not go 'online'

It constantly shows the offline icon in the systray. It was working fine but it seems to have stopped, and remains 'offline' when ever its away from the school network.

Surely when a laptop cant connect to the school network its smart enough to know and should 'just work' - it did do!

No proxy settings or static IP to worry about .. so im confused.

 

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Third party firewall locking down connectivity away from school?

Does the laptop definitely "connect" to the home network - IP address, PING router?

Definitely no proxy settings configured or required at school? (Not meant to be patronising, just checking.)

Is DHCP at her home working, perhaps her router/modem just crashed and she has not reset it.

Well I took the laptop home myself last night to see whats happening with it and i get the exact same thing going on. It connects to my router at home OK and can ping etc but cant get to the web - and it's constantly showing as 'offline'. I tried both wireless and cable and its the same with both connections.

If I double click the offline icon in the systray to bring up the sync box, it says there are offline files to sync. Now i know it was fully sync'd before i left the school .. but if i run it anyway it comes back with nothing to sync. and continues to stay offline! Grrrrrrrrr!

Im a bit stumped. It was working fine when i built it a month ago and i cant figure out why its doing this. PITA ..

Have you tried re-initializing the offline files cache just in case.

 

open my comp-tools-folder options-offline files tab.

 

hold down ctrl and shift together whilst you click delete files. It will ask if you want to re-initialize, select yes, reboot and let me know how you get on!

Aha! further investigation me thingks .. just been told there are 3 or 4 other laptops doing the same (same OU), and all started about the same time!

Sounds like I need to visit the GP

It was my fault. Retard issue!

Fixing something breaks something else syndrome

I wont tell you what i did to mess it up but it might have something to do with setting DNS server address in Policy and forgetting i'd done it
