GPO Software deployment

Run the msi from a command prompt as msiexec /i nameofmsi.msi /quiet and see if it installs.

 

I gave this a try but I can't seem to see if it is installing through Task Manager, and Ive waited 10 mins and nothing happened.

For some reason as me on my machine it didn't work, but I logged on as admin and its installed fine doing it that way. So im guessing do i need to run this from a script ing GPO rather than the MSI itself?

Looks like you don't have elevated install rights. You can still deploy via GPO though - just get the machine accounts to install, not the user accounts (as mentioned earlier).

I have added a batch file to run at start up to install the software, is this correct? also does the script need to be in the redeploy/software folder or in the scripts folder in sysvol?

 

this is the script I have created

 

msiexec /i \\server\remdeploy\boardworksgcseseparatesciences\boardworksgcseseparatesciences.msi /quiet

You shoould already have done an administrative install to the network folder so why do a batch file? If not then do this:

 

You should start with nothing in the deployment folder

Copy the original install msi into a local folder, e.g. c:\deploy, (just to make this easy)

Run msiexec /a c:\deploy\boardworksgcseseparatesciences.msi from your workstation

This should do an administrative install and ask for the network folder, in your case \\server\remdeploy\boardworksgcseseparatesciences

It'll also ask for all the other info as per a usual install, e.g. serial numbers etc if reqd

The msi it leaves in your network folder can now be run directly via the GPO, no script/batch file needed as you've already done all that. Just pick the newly-created msi when you set up the GPO

I know this is an old post but i am struggling at the moment with this install. i need to install it over the school. Issue is mine has a product key how do i install boardworks across the network if it has a product key? I tried to install to a staff shared drive but and create the shortcut to there desktop and comes up with an error saying "this product did not correctly install please contact your system administrator. the product ID is:" simple solution?

@samwells1234 if the software is asking for a product key then it will be quite an old version that is incompatible with Windows 7 and above. If you get in touch with support at boardworks.co.uk with your school's postcode I can take a look at the software you have and get some updated versions (which don't require a product key) sent out to you.
