swpmre Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Hi, We have Office 2010 etc licensed for use by staff and students on site. We got an Education discount for this. I have been asked to look at providing public access terminals (see other thread here). I've been told however, that these terminals aren't going to be restricted to existing registered students, but are accessible for the general public. Is there any impact on our licensing here? Since anyone can use the terminals, technically are they no longer education only use, and should we change our license agreement? Anyone else spot any other issues that might arise, licensing wise or anything else? Thanks Martin
powdarrmonkey Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Ask Microsoft, not uninitiated non-lawyers.
swpmre Posted September 21, 2010 Author Posted September 21, 2010 I tried. Sadly, since we are not subsiduary of the education department, and don't hold the license agreement ourselves, we couldn't get anyone to talk to us. While awaiting a reply from the bureacracy above, I thought I'd ask those on this forum, who might have some insight.
Ignatius Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Did you get the licence directly from Microsoft or a third party? If the latter, maybe they could shed light on this for you.
AceDaz Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 As far as I knew, that if the school owns the equipment and the licenses, then it doesn't matter who uses the workstations?!
DMcCoy Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 As far as I knew, that if the school owns the equipment and the licenses, then it doesn't matter who uses the workstations?! Office is a device license, so that *might* be ok, however CALs do not always cover users who are not part of the organisation (hence external connector licenses for servers). It's not an easy question to answer without putting it to the MS licensing team, even then the answer supplied may not be reflected in the actual wording of the agreement leaving it wide open for interpretation still.
