CAM Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Reg story here: Die-hard bug bytes Linux kernel for second time ? The Register With a quote from the article: the existence of vulnerabilities like these are a big deal in corporate, government and educational environments, where Linux is a mainstay has a large following. Well, the word mainstay is meant to be crossed out in typical El Reg mocking style but I can't do strikethrough on here. With SIMS and so much education software tied in to the Windows platform (and the recent FOSS arguments) are they really sure about that quote?

With SIMS and so much education software tied in to the Windows platform (and the recent FOSS arguments) are they really sure about that quote? Yep. Universities are educational environments too. When I was studying physics the whole department ran on Linux.
Ric_ Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Yeah... at St Andrews, the majority of the comp sci machines were Linux boxes too. Physics had a liking or SparcStations (they even had a room called the Sun Lounge). Also don't forget about all the backend services that run on various flavours of *nix.
3s-gtech Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 My Uni ran a large network of SparcStations too, six years ago anyway. Mac is *nix, to a degree. Quite a few servers here on various flavours. I'd certainly say it's a mainstay.
CAM Posted September 21, 2010 Author Posted September 21, 2010 Hmm true, didn't take Universities into account. There is still a fair gap between Secondary and colleges though?
