Just helping out at my wife's school as their techy is off at the moment.

 

Found a loop on a switch that was cutting off part of the building

 

and found out why the DHCP doesn't work and they've kept using static IPs - the DHCP subnet mask was a bit out - I deleted the scope and re-created (I knew that CNAS course at lancs would come in handy one day ) it and the school now has working DHCP (So next visit I'll just delete all the statics and then it'll be much easier to have teacher laptops setup to work at home and in school )

 

Back home - pick up num 2 daughter for college and off to start real job (where things might not go as well )

Out of interest ... did you document the changes so the techy would know what has been done? Just trying to work through some stuff locally when different folk come into some of our schools ... sounds a bit similar so thought I would ask a few questions.

Oops - typical programmer - no documentation

 

I'll start writing up a little wordpad doc for when he comes back - thanks for reminding me

(I normal see him on each Friday anyway )

I use Microsoft OneNote Sync With SkyDrive, Everywhere I go I always have this open to make notes and the like and then if need be i just print them to PDF and Email them off

Not a stab but honestly trying to find easy ways for folk like yourself who provide additional support to be able let others know how things are going.

With the way finances are in some schools I can see more and more trying to make use of additional support at no cost ... Governors, parents, community support ... I don't want to say to schools that it is wrong to get extra support in ... but ... I also don't want it to cause problems between them and who they can get their support from. A number of the governors and parents I have spoken with also don't want to make the techie feel as if they are trying to push him/her out ... usually they aren't.
