timfletcher Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 We are looking at rolling out a wireless network to cover our entire site of about 2000 users. The problem that we have is how to support the very high density of users that we are looking at using a 2.4Ghz (ie g) based network, given the number of over lapping APs is restricted to 3. I belive that a solution is possiable using 802.11a technology and I have seen some references to solutions using ap controllers. However I am interested to hear from anyone using a controler based system about how well things work with a large number (150-200 or more) users in a small area.
CyberNerd Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 At that density, for the reasons you cited you should definately be looking at 802.1a 5GHz. You should read up on Becta's technical specifications for instititional infrastructure - it states that wireless should only be used to 'support' the wired infrastructure. Not replace it. This is going to be an extremely expensive exersise. laptops/handhelds for all kids is it?. good luck.

Ric_ Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 I use a BlueSocket solution which works great. The APs are 802.11a/b/g and I believe they also do a version that is 802.11a/b/g/n now! localzuk Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Try contacting a company such as React Technologies and ask for their advice. We had a site survey done by them and they were very quick and efficient.

I have a 3com 802.11a solution, because we plan on having areas of high density usage. all in all i have an AP in every class room (57 all together). As well as some dual radio APs (a and g).

If you have to many it can cause problems. localzuk I agree with you. I would have a site survey done. I got my hands on a scaled map of the school and using a compass i worked out the best area to place my AP. simple but works. Ric whats this BlueSocket stuff you speak of?
