Taking a chance.

I'm currently agonising over what (for me) is a difficult decision.

 

Currently I've got a good job, which I enjoy, and I'm nicely content. All fine and well so far. I also have few ties, the ones which exist being family, friendships and relationships - all but family created over the last two years struggle since I uprooted myself and abandoned those I had previously. Even family turned into a once a month/every few months thing for most of the first year while I was finding my feet.

 

I'm just now starting to feel settled again, but have started to consider a somewhat more drastic change/move. The first was a move, within the same country, of about 100 miles. Not too bad at all, and all for the job I'm now in.

 

Now I'm looking at applying to another job (which is very much a long shot, the place I'm looking at applying for is very, very selective) which would involve a bigger move. I'm looking at applying to the CERN installation in France/Switzerland. Most likely I will be going ahead with the application, and will be crushed when I don't get it, but I wanted to do two things. Firstly to vent and hopefully get out some of the anxiety (now done) and secondly to see if anyone else has done something similar in the past, or has any opinions about making such a move?

I've lived and worked all over the world, and the thrill of going to a new country and living in a different culture is great. As regards to family and freinds that's what phones and email are for. Yo cannot be held back by tehm. Good families will understand teh need to move on and good freinds will always be there, regardless of how far away you are. There really is no easy way to go about it than to dive straight in, and enjoy learning a new language and living in a new environment. Oh, and Switzerland is beutiful

 

P.S. You'll be fine. To many people end up in a rut and not achieving all they could by feelign bound to ties that are not really there at all, only in the persons head.

Go for it. I am starting to feel the same, I applied for a few out there jobs that I knew I wouldn't get just in case. Looking at a few possibilities now. Nothing wrong with looking & you never know what might happen!

As others have said go for it, I often look at jobs and think hmmm should I etc and I really should do it, so I did a bit since, applied for the job of IT Director for a new City Academy in London and got to a 2nd stage interview for it which surprised me, fine thats only London but we are talking a good few hrs on a train or car from where I live now (and all my family are) but as has been said they will understand and know its for your future and you control that and you need to ensure your doing the best for it.

Speaking as an ex-recruitment consultant - if the job interests you enough to go for it, then you must have a feeling that you COULD move that far - and so that is all you need to think about at this stage.

As long as the job interests you, go for it

You need not make a final decision until you are offered it, and by then you will have much more info from interviews etc to make that decision.

I don't see why you have to abandon anyone though - I have friends and family all over the world that I stay in touch with - in this modern world it isnt difficult, and it means that you always have somewhere nice to go and stay

I know it's a beautiful place, and my family are actually encouraging me to move rather than trying to hold me back. It's the progress I've made since moving that I'm worried about, but I can always try and make that again. The main reason I'm trying to get objective viewpoints is because I'm sure that my family are not unbiased.

 

Although there's four new languages I could learn rather than just one. I've got basic knowledge of two of them, but German and Rumantsch I know nothing about.

Thanks. I've actually had quite a few offers from people, should I get it, to come visit and 'make sure I'm settling in'. I'm sure the fact that I'd be living on the edge of a mountain has nothing to do with it.
