Group Policy Preferences File Extentions

I want to assosiate .pdf with Adobe Reader, currently opening in Adobe Photoshop.

 

I noticed Group Policy Preferences has this under Per Machine, i cannot get it to work. Anybody used it yet to do this? What do i put in the 'Action' box?

 

I put PDF in the file extentiom box

Adobe PDF as the Associated Class

I did a new action and called it open (no idea what i should put in there) and pointed it to the adobe reader exe.

 

 

That does not work, so any idea what i am doing wrong?

I think you might need to change the action to 'Create'.

Actually, if you are replacing an existing association, I think you'll need to choose Replace so that it replaces it, as Create will only create it if it doesnt exist. Thats how Reg GPP's worky anyhow

 

Amusingly tho, I cant seem to find the GPP File Associations section you are refering to hehe

Yeah hehe know the feeling. I've been using Replace and seems to do the trick for reg settings at least

i assume replace just writes that value in everytime policy is procesed and replace does it once if it needs to

Update modify's the settings you have and merges them with the settings you set. Replace, well replaces what's there with what you specify.

Sorry to drag up an old thread did you ever get this working?

You may find that you have to delete the registry key below in order for the file association to be restored to what it should be.

 

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pdf\UserChoice

That seems top have done the trick. But now although it picked up my changes the icon is now broken and I can't see a way to associate an icon to the .pdf files. I'm making the changes under the user config if that makes any difference?
