I need to upgrade the firmware in a Cisco 2611 router and Catalyst 2912-XL switch however the Cisco website seems to hate me

 

If anyone has release 12.2 upwards of the IOS software I would be grateful of a PM ASAP.

 

(Also if anyone knows how to get an ethernet interface on a Cisco 2611 router to get its address, etc. via DHCP I would be eternally indebted...)

Hi.

 

I thought a command like:

 

ip address dhcp

 

on your interface would suffice...but my memory may not serve me right here. So you would change to your requried interface:

 

Interface ethernet0 (or whatever it is)

ip address dhcp

 

I think this would be unusual for a router though- normally you would want to assign a static IP address to your router interfaces- or even make your router a DHCP server.

I know that it is an unusual setup but for my testing I need to hook it up to a cable modem which does some magical DHCP pass-thru thing from the ISP.

 

I tried that command in IOS in the Ethernet0/0 interface to no avail (the Ethernet0/1 interface has a static IP) and I do want to use the router as a DHCP server (hence the need for the upgrade). I currently only have IOS 12.0 so I am guessing the 2 features that I need were added later (I know that 12.2 has them).

Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Yes- I think the features were added from 12.1 onwards. Have you tried the command as follows?

 

ip address dhcp [client-id interface name] [hostname host-name]

 

I think this method has to use the 12.1 and onwards IOS (possibly 12.2(3)), and can be used on interfaces that connect directly to and ISP. As you'll know this lets you do clever stuff like PAT so that you can let private inetrnal addresses get to the internet. Just as an aside, a lot of it depends on your DHCP server (i.e. the router using pass-through). The command can be changed to:

 

ip address dhcp client-id ethernet 1 (etc)

ip address dhcp hostname

ip address dhcp client-id ethernet 0/0

I've finally got registered and then the stoopid Cisco site threw me out, resetting my password as it went!!!

 

Surely somebody on here must have worked out how to work the Cisco site and can get hold of the IOS software for me?

I registered and went to the downloads page but then it made me go around in circles and I sometimes got the error that I was using the wrong password , I think it would be an idea to contact them via email or something and see if they can send you it via cd

IMHO Cisco have the worst website in the world. They don't even have a simple page listing their product range - at least not one that I could see

@ charge ya - It depends how badly you want the software whether you pay for the cd or not

but if u r *meant* to be able to access it from the website, they should help out. I doubt sending a cd out will be needed.

 

But then again, I dont know cisco so there we go lol Just basing it on previous co.'s I've dealt with on similar matters.
