Latest free server operating system for schools, now built on Ubuntu.

Karoshi Linux - Linux based OS designed for schools.

 

The Karoshi Linux team is proud to announce their latest offering of the Linux based server operating and management system designed specifically for schools and education. Built on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Karoshi Linux 7 is now offered in both 64bit and 32bit downloads.

 

The web management system allows you to manage your servers anywhere with an Internet connection, and because we know that system administrators like to holiday and keep an eye on their servers, we have also introduced a mobile phone management system, that has been tested on iPhone and Android mobiles, on top of this, in case of an emergency, network monitoring emails and text messages alerts the system administrator if a server or service has gone down.

 

Karoshi Linux 7 is now modular which allows the system administrator to decide on the servers and modules required, instead of having a default installation, allowing them to be able to choose if they wish to have various module and server combinations, along with choosing which TCP/IP numbers, domain name and server names they wish to have for their system.

 

We hope that this version of Karoshi Linux will be useful and as usual will be grateful for anyone who will test the system, even if they do not plan to use it, we would also like to hear from you, if you have any ideas or suggestions, email us at: [email protected]

What is Karoshi?

 

In the UK, the majority of schools run a system that allows school administrators to do things such as add users, create windows profiles, change passwords, and the majority of everyday network managing things that schools need within a specially made GUI.

For those of us new to this, do you have a full feature list (apologies if I missed it on the website!)

And is this designed for use in a clean isntall environment, or can it be added to a windows domain with Exchange, etc, with no issue? I'm guessing as it's based on Ubuntu it can be!

It does other bits and pieces under those, but those are the main core things.

 

At the moment it cannot(with the default installation) be put into a standard windows domain unless it is the PDC. You are not the first to ask this so now that KL7 has been released we are looking at a way to make it even more modular so you can for example, install the file servers and the proxy server, but keep your Windows PDC.

 

So with the current version 7 release it is designed to be for a new environment.

Karoshi sounds like a perfect addition to our setup here. Will fire up a test server in my lab tonight, and check it out.

Wow!

 

This this rocks! I'm having a blast. Very cool stuff. I'm already under the hood tinkering with it. It has every service I would want to install, and a nice custom web-based gui (like webmin) to boot! Excellent.

 

I'm blown away by all the features built-in, that aren't even mentioned in the documentation. That doc should be at least 200 pages long, to cover everything this does.

 

I'm pleased to see shorewall installed and configured, I'm already tweaking it, opened 22 in rules and did a dpkg-reconfigure openssh-server so I could ssh in (I'm a command line kind of guy... an old debian zealot here). Will play with the samba to openldap next. Going to try it all

 

I'll give a full review after I've tested it thoroughly.
