sonic1485 Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 It's the 3rd day of my summer hols and I'm bored already! Can anyone suggest places in the UK I should visit? I'm already planning on going to Snowdon and Stonehenge. I'll be going to London later in the holidays too so is there anything I should see while I'm there?
srochford Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 What do you want to see? Architecture? Parks/Gardens? Museums? Rivers? Markets/shops? Are you looking to stay in places or just go on days out? Where do you live now (if you're near a major railway station there are loads of places you can do for a day out; if you're in rural Wales it's a lot harder to go to different places (but then you have got lots of countryside on your doorstep!) I like London; I've now lived here for 23 years and still find new places to explore so I'm sure you can fill up a summer holiday :-)

My first thought was Stonehenge, while in the area Salisbury is a nice city. The cathedral was the world's tallest building for hundreds of years... Avebury, and Uffington if the truly ancient is what floats your boat. In London, the Wheel, down to Tate Modern, over the (now not) wobbly bridge, and then back through the Strand... cookie_monster Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 On your way back from Wales you could call by Chester which is very nice then it's only an hour or so to the Peak District if you're into outdoors walking climbing etc. If you wan to go further afield I'd recommend Inverness and the area around, I did a 10 day run last year and went to Stirling/Bridge of Allan, then up to Inverness across the highlands to Durness and then drove down the west coast to Ft William. Had a great time
TechMonkey Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 In London do the main museums, so Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Tate Britain and Modern (Britain if you can only do one) and the V&A. If there is still time there is the London Dungeon, St Pauls, London Eye and the Transport Museum. As others have said it depends on what you like. If you just want to relax then a wander in Hyde park may be in order or if you are an avid engineering fan you could go to the Thames Barrier. Ohh and best thing about the museums are they are free!

I live in Wolverhampton so there is a train station near by. I also drive so I could get to those hard to reach places. @Andrew_C: I like historical places. I've driven to Stonehenge before (according to the sat nav) but it was at night and I couldn't see it lol @cookie_monster: I'd love to do the highlands I haven't been up there since i was about 10.

Why start by travelling sooooo far? You have got the Black Country Living Museum on your doorstep where you could easily spend a day exploring how people used to live. Then pop in you car and check out the Ironbridge Gorge Museums - you can get a "passport" that gives you unlimited access to all ten museums for a whole year and an open invitation to make one visit to any that you missed after that time! mb

SpuffMonkey Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 (edited) IMO Avebury is a much better place than Stonehenge. seconded - I found Stonehenge a disappointment - whereas Avebury is "Wow" - then you need to watch "Children of the Stones" From Wolverhampton - Leominster, Hereford, Ludlow and surroundings are pretty, Brecon Beacons and mid-Wales - Pistyll Rhaeadr deffo worth a look, specially after rain - down to the Mumbles and Gower and Pembroke coast (Tenby) Going east is a bit flatter really - so less dramatic - but pretty in places - Cotswolds/Fens/Lincoln & Lincolnshire Wolds (Louth) Bon voyage Edited July 28, 2010 by SpuffMonkey

Yeh Zerohour is right then add on the route I posted above, Edinburgh on the way up and Glasgow on the way down If you do go to Avebury / Stonehenge don't forget Silbury Hill there's usually some really good crop circles around there that are interesting. He told me he prefers Cowes to Ryde. I agree Avebury is better. When I was a kid, we lived a few miles from Stonehenge and it was not fenced off. We could run around, climb on the stones (there were still a lot of fallen ones then) and even have our picnic in the circle. It's really boring now. Still a spectacular sight as you drive past on the A303. If you are in that area, Stourhead Gardens is worth a visit. They filmed a chunk of Pride and Prejudice there. It's NT so not cheap. If you want to spin a few less miles, come to Droitwich on a sunny day and have a swim in the lido.

As a Member I think the £30 odd I pay a year is well worth it. Stourhead is one of my 'often visits' along with Dyrham, Nr Bath. Lacock Abbey and Village are great. Harry Potter and much more was filmed there.

Look at your local tourist info site or the local council site. We had family over from Canada and we went to all kinds of places we had never thought of as they were looking with touristy eyes.
