I'm still trying to persuade my boss to build us a large-scale non-hazardous liquid coolant storage facility. Olymptic-sized for preference, with a rapid inspection launching platform.

We even have a school pool which was revamped and is un-heated, my idea was to roll the whole upgrade into a carpark expantion which was also needed. All that tarmak with water pipes through it would make for a huge solar collector and with a large burried tank in the ground as a heat capacitor along with a heat exchanger you could store the days heat underground and then push it to the pool in the morning for negligible energy costs. Tie in the server cooling loop with another heat exchanger/pump to the heat capacitor and you would be very effectivly recycling waste energy.

 

Total blueskys thing as it would cost alot and is a bit foward thinking for a school but something worthy of grants from places studying that kind of thing and with the amount of energy that the school burns it would pay for itself in a comparitivly short period of time if also piped into the school heating loop.

Since the air con in the ICT suite died this week, I don't think there is much of a need for heating in here currently...

I think that the future is going to be multi circut liquid cooling along with higher acceptable running temperatures and more efficient components that produce less heat. Unfortunatly is is still a fair way off and will be ages before this level trickles down to the scale of most school IT centers.

 

I accualy think the same - with progams like the 80+ efficancy ratings and newer multi core processors kicking out more power per watt energy efficancy is going to be a very big thing.

As long as its not the same system Apple used in their G5's which had a tendency to leak very corosive liquid everywhere.

I remember reading quite a while ago about a datacenter that basically had no wall on one side, just letting the datacentre be cooled by the natural breeze. They found the dust etc really wasn't a problem and was much cheaper than running A/C tco wise. Can't find the article anywhere now though.

I notice you have just what I need sitting on the floor - a Smart UPS 1500. I have two but need another as I am managing to squeeze in a few more boxes in the rack. I have already overloaded one of them !!

Nothing but a pile of chips at the moment, do it justice with some good cable runs.

 

Colour coded, and nicely bundled.

 

color coding is fine but not as useful as investing in a good quality label printer.

 

how do people do front to back [of rack] cabling in a near fully populated rack without side channels. Leave a few U free and tack the cables to the side ? I notice he's got side channels on his rack, these i think are very useful for cable management....if you've got the space to accomodate a wider rack in your server room.

health and safety look at those trailing cables...........:)

 

i must post a picture of our cabinet its a right mess hopefully we will strip it down and label the cables up within the next 2 weeks
